I am not young, my children are a long time after school age and I have no imagine about schools and education system there. But I hope that students are not concentrating on memorize but they have your hads free for projects and team works.
I would like to ask you for a favour. Please send this video to as many school as possibble! That’s really matter! As I’ve studied at Faculty of Education, I think the concept of student’s colaboration, passions and autonomy in a system of education should be involved and declarated also at every university, whatever they are related with the education in general. So sad that a lot of my colleagues which actually teach are absolutely agree with the main topics said in the video, but never one of them had the opportunity to discuss it at university or at school. So the situation seems to be closed for different opinions, for open minds. What does have to happen to finally change this old and unfuctional system that values only memorising and repeating? The day before yesterday my son came home – sad and frustrated. They had to calculate 64 mathematical examples and he failed. At least he took whole situation as his failure. And he told me we must practisize it more. It was obvious how much he was disappointed. I know he loves math. So i looked at it and in 64 examples he was wrong in 10 cases. To change his opinion about himself took me the whole afternoon. I tried to explain him he was right for 54 times! It’s great! Mistakes are welcomed! It’s ok! The mark says nothing about you as a person, about your qualities! So hard pressure to be perfect. Well, what to say more?
Beautifully written, Petra! I would also like to see the style of Czech education change – embracing mistakes, experimenting and learning to trust in the power of trying rather than prioritising talent, bright intellect and allowing 0 mistakes.
I have small children and because of that I can’t compare my study at the elementary school and the present school system. I think, there aren’t many diferencies. What I have seen in the video, I have to agree. The school system in the Czech republic (in the clasic schools) is out of day. My good friend teaches at Scioschool and she is very excited from this system. When I have heard about it, I have to agree, that the school day is very interesting and children must be happier than from the normal school. But I am afraid, if they have the some knowledge like from the normal school…
I have read very interesting book Indické léto. Dobrý muž v Asii (Indian Summer) by Will Randall. Author is a teacher and he has learnt in England and in India. He describes differences between studying in GB and India from teacher´s view. I agree with a lot of his oppinions.
My good friend is an engineer and also he has taught two or three years in an elementary school. He had a good argument for memorizing opposite all things are in the internet: If you want stop massive bleeding from an artery you must know how do it now! You don´t have any time for searching in the internet.
It is very wide and complex problem. I can follow my son, his school is complete different from my. I think education at school change a lot last 20 years. The pupils in school are motivated to work in small groups to solve problems, to do some exercises, to practise their knowledge, the education is more interactive. But my son hate this new way of education. He is very clever and high inteligent and wants to know many and many facts, new information, prefer to work alone, not in group and continue as fast as possible. So he suffers in new education school system.
The expectation of some teachers that the best students in group can help the others students to do their work is nonsence! There is no motivation for weak students to do anything in a group and better students are not teacher to motivate them or to force them to do something.
The most important is a motivation and a discipline of each student to try to do their best
at school. Without it all new way of education can not work. So the most important is
an upbringing and attitude of parents and personality of each student, and it is not possible to change.
Becouse I am a child and I am only 13 yo., its really hard to talk about something like that. I think there is still many things to improve, but its not only about the system but I think its mostly about the teachers. I have got kinda bad teacher for physics becouse he is asking us questions every lessson and he wants only descriptions. So when you know how does the gravity works but you dont know the same description (but you just say the same but with another words) you get a F. And when you ask the teacher why, he say this: You have to remember the same discreption what I said last lesson, I dont want to hear your own discreptions..
All the points mentioned are true. But I loved school. From my experience, I have to say that a lot depends on the teachers. In my life (from primary school to university) I met many teachers who were boring and forced us to memorise things without thinking. But I also met many teachers who were amazing, smart, creative and motivating.
It is realy log time, when I studied. All was then strictly fixed. I think, it is now a bit freer, but the informations about our classic aducation are not so possitive.
It is i long time, when my daughters visited an elementary or high school. But I still have remembered how ineffective was the teaching and how insufficient was vocational preparation. Unfortunately also in college or at university. Five years ago after A level my youngest daughter prefered the study in Great Britain, because that is more practically.
Problem 1
The school practically raises “robots” from children.
Problem 2
They just have to follow whatever is laid down instead of taking charge and making the most of their lives.
Problem 3
Learning can be much deeper and more authentic.
Unless learning of things that children will soon forget.
They don’t need them to live.
Nowadays this information can be very easily found on the Internet.
Problem 4
The classical school system is “ossified”.
It doesn’t support talented and exceptionally gifted children.
Problem 5
If a child is slower in a schoolwork he or she is considered incompetent.
Problem 6
The lectures are terrible. They are tiring and boring. The children are demotivated and frustrated.
These are such good comments and opinions Lenka. What do you think they can change to make school better for students?
It’s very difficult, because education in the Czech republic isn’t flexible. There would have to be a lot of changes. I study elementary school more then thirty years ago. I have two children, they are studying elementary school now. Unfortunately there are many things that haven’t changed at all during that time – for example a lot of memorize or long lectures.
Dear Romandi, I’m sorry.
I study elementary school more then thirty years ago. – in this sentence I should have “studied”.
Thank you for understanding.
Lenka
