Listening: Power of Personality
Listen to a podcast where two people are talking about the power of personality.
- Listen to the podcast twice and see if you notice interesting vocabulary and combinations of words. Would you express yourself like this actively?
- Do the quiz underneath the audio.
- In the comment section, write whether you think your personality changes depending on what language you speak. If so, how?
Timing 20 mins.
Pamatujte, nemusíte rozumět všemu, tj. každému slovu a všem detailům. Nechte váš mozek, aby odhadoval neznámá slova a zaměřte se na přibližný význam celého textu. Hlavní je pochopit rámcový obsah a ne každý detail. A ještě “hlavnější” je vystavit se každý den angličtině a užívat si to.
Učte se jako polygloti. Všímejte si zajímavých kombinací slov, které sice už znáte, ale aktivně byste je nepoužili. Vždy se sami ptejte: “Řekl/a bych to takhle, kdybych to chtěl/a říct?” A nezapomeňte si všímat i výslovnosti a navazování slov!

The one speaker is more loud than the second one and if I wanted to understand the first one I had problems because the second one was too loud for me. And the different level of the voices cause loss of concentration on the podcast itself.
I am not sure if the language I speak in the moment has any influence on my personality.
I absolutely agree with the idea that a language can have a big influence on a speaker. I remember when i spoke italian not only culture, but even the accent and the intonation typical for italian sentences pushed me to be more extroverted and open than it’s usually for me. Also when I speak english I can feel how my personality changes. I am like actress supposed to play her role or something like that. I think it’s natural. Different language provides us the option to hide our personality traits in foreign words. I mean it’s eaysier to be more open and extroverted in the foreign language than in the native one. The speaker is using the foreign words as the shield and protection. The wall. He or she can be suddenly a different person. Maybe we can show more sides of our personality than in native language. Sometimes it can be really surprising.
I’m generally an introvert. But when I speak Czech, I think I am friendly and understanding. If I have to speak English with a stranger, it’s a problem. But if I talk to young children in class, I always prepare myself and act more extroverted. When I graduated from the Russian language, I was much more confident because I spent a month in Volgograd and Moscow. I also studied Russian intensively for 9 years. This means that I still have a long way to go in order to communicate well in English.
I have very big problem to speak different language than Czech. Normal I am extroverted human, sometimes I speak a lot, I am cheerful. When I have to speak in English , it is very big tragedy. I am very shy, I say very simple sentences. I am immediately stressed and this is the problem – THE STRESS.
Exactly. I have the same problem. Speaking in English is stressful for me especially at work. Most of my colleagues speak English very well. They are able to lead a meeting in English, make a presentation and so on …. Sometimes I have feeling that I am not able to create a sentence.
I agree with the opinium, that when I speak English, I am not so extroverted than when I speak Czech. I absolutely agree with Monika, that the biggest problem is the stress. I am in a stress even when I listen excercise in this web jazyko.cz – that not normal, maybe I am not normal 🙂 🙂 🙂
My speaking with English natives is still very simple. But I have a lot of friends from Germany or Italy who speak Czech very well. And our conversation was always about different points of view or some experience like people from different cultural circles.
I love Japan and I think I have an idea why Japanese change their behaviour when they speak English language opposite Japanese language. That is not only a different cultural circle but “a different cultural planet”. 🙂 For more an example all books by Antonín Líman (in Czech), Ruth Benedict (in English or in Czech too) etc.
Thank you for the tip, Helena. It sounds interesting.
I do not think my personality changes depending on language I speak. I think the reason is
I never have been perfect and fluent in any foreign language . So I am I , in all 2 foreign languages I can speak as an speaker of an intermediate level. The problem is not change of my personality, but a lack of vocabulary, so the others can find me a little bit another personality, than I am in fact, speaking Czech language. I am not able to do jokes , to be wry or as kind as I am able to be speaking my matternity language.
It is a difficult question for me, I have never thought about it. It is not so easy for me to speak english. I need to more learn english 🙂 and than I will be more confident. I speak germany better and I think, I feel cooler.
I am very extroverted and friendly person and I have very varied vocabulary in my native language. Very often I speak German with my friends from Austria and then I have trouble. I want to speak as good as native speaker. Unfortunately I miss the rich vocabulary… It is the same with English. I need to speak slowly and think throught easier.
I would say, I agree with idea, that people’s personality changes depending on what language they speak. Because when I speak my native language, I am more extroverted, frendlier, cheerfull. But when I speak English language, I am more introverted, fearful, less open to talk about more complex topics. That is because of that I don’t know this language perfect, I have to hard thinking about language and I’m nervous I can’t comment correctly my feelings and opinions.
I think, when I will know English language better, my personality will be more open.
That’s a really good point Stana. You will gain more confidence the more you practice speaking English. In no time you’ll be just as extroverted when speaking English as you are in Czech and ready to talk about everything and anything you want to and express your feelings and opinions easily.
My answer the question “wether I think my personality changes depending on what language you speak” is very difficult.
I don’t speak English well yet. I limit myself to the basic phrases. When I speak I am introverted but I try to be friendly and polite.
